"Mr President, this year, in Portugal, more than 3 000 firms closed their doors, investment and industrial output fell to the levels of 15 years ago, and agricultural output declined to a level not seen for 16 years. The programme of aggression, impoverishment and extortion conceived by the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission and the European Central Bank is clearly compounding and aggravating this scenario. The recession is upon us. People in general are seeing their incomes fall as the cost of living rises, and the attack on strategic state-owned or partly state-owned companies is being prepared. Unemployment is spreading and with it poverty, while genuine social dramas are becoming ever more frequent. Is not the disaster we are witnessing in Greece enough for them to reverse course?Hence we wish to hail the struggle of Portuguese workers and the Portuguese people, of which the demonstrations by the CGTP Intersindical this coming 1 October will be a vivid expression. Certainly many thousands will be participating to say ‘no’ to injustices and blanket impoverishment and to give voice to their refusal to allow the recipes of this troika to despoil their present and rob them of their future. Their cry will find resonance in the struggles of workers and peoples throughout Europe. The troika really should start to listen to them."@en1
