"The Rules of Procedure of the European Parliament stipulate that the Committee on Petitions must report each year to Parliament on the results of its deliberations and activities. In 2010, the European Parliament received 1 655 petitions, a fall of 14% from the 1 924 petitions in 2009. The environment remains the main preoccupation for petitioners, followed by fundamental rights, the single market and justice. The Germans are still the most active petitioners, then the Spanish and Italians. Increasing numbers of petitions are being submitted online: the figure rose to 63.2 % in 2010. For my part, I am delighted that the Treaty of Lisbon has introduced the possibility of citizens’ initiatives. I continue to follow the work of the Committee on Petitions and have approved its annual activity report."@en1
