"Indigenous supplies of oil and gas provide an important contribution to the European Union’s energy consumption and energy security. Over 90% of the EU’s oil and 60% of its gas is produced via offshore operations. Activity is not uniformly distributed across the EU and the large majority of operations take place in the North Sea. A number of incidents in recent years have led all operators to reassess and improve the safety of their industry. The resolution adopted today proposes measures designed to protect the environment from all possible risks of pollution. Lastly, it is important to note that in order to develop a rigorous safety culture, it is vital to engage the offshore workforce in health and safety initiatives, as they are often best placed to identify the barriers to be overcome and the right solutions to adopt."@en1
