"I welcome the adoption of this own-initiative report aimed at improving the safety of offshore oil and gas platforms. Following the Gulf of Mexico disaster, I voiced my support for an improvement in safety in order to prevent a repeat of this kind of disaster, which not only endangers marine ecosystems but also severely affects the economic sectors of fishing and tourism. Parliament has voted in favour of stricter controls by independent experts and of the adoption of contingency plans prior to each operation, which I believe is an effective and proportionate response to the need to improve the safety of these platforms. Parliament has also referred to the industry’s liability in the event of a disaster, in accordance with the polluter pays principle, but without overlooking the supervisory and coordinating role that the public sector must play. I am pleased that my political group, the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), has insisted that no moratorium be imposed on the subject. Indeed, the introduction of a moratorium on all new deep-sea oil drilling in EU waters would be a disproportionate reaction to the need to ensure high safety standards across the EU."@en1
