"On the eve of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, the report adopted today highlights the often worrying situation of women approaching retirement. 26% of women aged 55 and over are at risk of poverty, compared with 20.2% of men. Their careers are often interrupted by periods of leave, part-time hours, even time lost through caring for their children, and their pensions are often smaller than those of men. That is why the Member States should genuinely integrate gender equality in the preparation and implementation of pension reforms. Women over 55 also suffer twofold discrimination in the labour market, which explains their low rate of employment: we must reverse this trend and enable women to stay in the labour market for as long as they wish."@en1
