"Madam President, the external borders of the Union are the joint responsibility of the Member States. At the same time, each Member State is responsible for ensuring compliance with its obligations under international agreements. This report makes reference to the limited room to act that this EU agency has had since it was founded, and it proposes necessary changes that aim to facilitate the effective work of the agency as a tool to combat cross-border crime effectively.
Today, we are debating the revision of the framework for Frontex. Is this an opportune moment to go into the material deficiencies, such as the accusations of human rights infringements? The rapporteur has already presented amendments that aim to strengthen the provisions in relation to human rights and the European Parliament’s rights of democratic control.
