". The environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted from a huge oil spill, has led to concerns over the risks, responsibilities and legislation surrounding oil exploration and extraction being placed on the agenda. The report on EU action on oil exploration and extraction in Europe highlights the EU’s responsibility to ensure that its coasts are protected and that it has the capacity to respond to this type of natural disaster. I welcome the inclusion of the suggestions I tabled, especially with regard to European coordination and the role of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). As regards coordination throughout the EU and with neighbouring countries, it is necessary to ensure best practices and the harmonisation of the various approaches to both accident prevention and response used in the various regions of Europe. I would like to highlight the role of EMSA, located in Lisbon, which provides aid and technical assistance in the area of maritime safety and protection from pollution caused by ships. This report proposes extending EMSA’s competencies with regard to monitoring, information sharing and coordinating prevention and response."@en1
