"Madam President, domestic oil and gas supplies have significant benefits in terms of energy security and energy consumption in the EU. More than 90% of our oil and 60% of our gas comes from offshore production, however this production is not equally distributed throughout the European Union. In the same way not all offshore activities relating to oil and gas production in European waters take place in waters under the control of the European Union.
The aforementioned disaster in connection with the Deepwater Horizon platform was an incentive to all those involved in exploration and extraction of offshore oil and gas to re-evaluate the safety of their industries. Even if the oil and gas industries can boast improving results in the health and safety of their workers, focusing on the safety of personnel should not detract from the safety of their procedures, particularly in accident prevention and management. I firmly believe that the time is right to monitor the strict control and continuous testing and assessment of the environmental impacts of substances in order to ensure that they are harmless, even if they escape, thus avoiding an impact on public health and the environment."@en1
