"Madam President, in recognition of the importance of the Organisation for Black Sea Economic Cooperation and the Convention on the protection of the Black Sea against pollution, and bearing in mind the Black Sea’s geostrategic importance to the European Union, we call on the Commission to devise an EU Strategy for the Black Sea, which will be integrated with the EU Strategy for the Danube Region.
Sea fishing is an important economic sector for the countries in the Black Sea region. Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007, which extended the scope of the common fisheries policy to the Black Sea. Black Sea fisheries face the following challenges: lack of cooperation in regional fisheries management, use of destructive harvesting methods, eutrophication and pollution, pollution from land-based sources and from direct discharges, loss of valuable spawning and breeding grounds and illegal fishing.
I think that the Black Sea should enjoy the appropriate status in EU policies. With this in mind, sufficient diplomatic and scientific efforts should be made and ample financial resources provided to support sustainable fishing in this basin."@en1
