"Mr President, access to raw materials is of crucial importance to the welfare of European citizens and, therefore, the situation on the commodities markets deserves top priority. In this respect, the EU should ensure transparency, stability and a certain degree of market regulation, and it should always consider the question of how far regulation should go.
In addition, we need to properly tap the potential of recycling and of the diversification of sources. Sustainability is the keyword here. European companies have to pursue a responsible purchasing policy, and the European Union must ensure good framework conditions. When EU legislation on conflict minerals is being proposed, everything must be done to prevent the ordinary people affected by mineral extraction from suffering as a result. The demand for raw materials should be met in a fashion that does justice to the countries of origin in terms of human rights, the environment, fair and open trade and market stability. It goes without saying that I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for our rapporteur."@en1
