lpv:translated text	". Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, first of all, as is customary here in Parliament, I would like to begin by thanking Mr Bütikofer sincerely for this report. As standing rapporteur for Policy Coherence for Development I am very, very grateful to the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy for taking on board many of the proposals of the Committee on Development. As Mr Bütikofer has already stated, the raw materials issue is extremely important: the United Nations forecasts a growth in demand for raw materials of 300% by 2050. Of course, this discussion is also important in the context of coherent development policy. Let me give you an example: dubious accounting practices among international raw materials companies and inadequate contracts with these companies mean that developing countries are losing an estimated USD 80 to 160 billion every year. Compare this with the development aid provided by the European Union, which amounts to 8 billion per year. In this context, our aid is like a drop of water hitting a sizzling hot stone. That is why it is so important that the report should refer clearly to transparency initiatives like the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). Because these initiatives can only bear fruit in the long term, I welcome offers of concrete help as part of the Joint Africa EU Strategy Action Plan 2011-2013, for example with the negotiation of contracts with raw materials companies. According to estimates, every single euro spent in this way generates added value of 10 euro and I believe we can say that this would be more effective aid than cosmetic measures taken at a later date."@en1
