"Madam President, there are not many of us here, but we are here and we are speaking out on behalf of Europe. Our voice must be heard. The country we are talking about is one of the poorest in Africa. On the one hand there is no power there, since anarchy rules and power is on the streets, and yet on the other hand there is a great deal of power, since it is in everyone’s hands. Sometimes a representative of the authorities, a policeman or member of the armed forces, can decide over people’s lives and health. This is terrible. I would like to say that the European Parliament is dealing with this matter once again, and it is once again issuing a very dramatic appeal to the authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo to provide genuine protection for their own people. Finally, I would like to note that – as Mr Kaczmarek said – we really should think hard about what European taxpayers’ money is being spent on in this context."@en1
