"I voted to adopt the European Parliament resolution on changes to Schengen because the creation of the Schengen area and the integration of the Schengen
into the EU framework is one of the greatest achievements of the European integration process, marked by the absence of controls at internal borders and unprecedented freedom of movement within the European Union.
The freedom of movement has become one of the foundations of EU citizenship and one of the cornerstones of the EU as an area of freedom, security and justice, enshrining the right to move and reside freely in any Member State while enjoying the same rights, guarantees and protections, including the ban on all forms of discrimination based on nationality. This is why there is an urgent requirement to remove all the barriers which Romanian and Bulgarian citizens are still faced with and to strongly condemn the attempt by some Member States to reintroduce border controls, thereby jeopardising the very spirit of the Schengen
