By 2030 the number of people of working age in the European Union will have decreased by 6.8%. There will only be two people of working age to support one retired person. Europe’s ageing society is posing economic threats and it is therefore important to ensure that people remain in the labour market for as long as possible, and that older workers participate actively in society, are healthy, active and independent. I voted in favour of this report on the European Year for Active Ageing (2012), because it calls on us to help maintain old people’s social, physical and spiritual well-being. I agree that in order to achieve these objectives it is particularly important that there should be solidarity and cooperation between generations. I welcome the proposal to declare 2012 the European Year for Active Ageing. This would promote solidarity between generations, and would underline the importance of the contribution older people make to society."@en1
