"Mr President, Commissioner, following the European Council of June, the Commission has decided to put forward in September new exemption mechanisms in the Schengen area. Despite all the verbal precautions used, it is clear for everyone to see how much this looks like the start of the dismantling of the free movement of persons in Europe. For that matter, some statements are unmistakable, such as the one that justifies this new mechanism as necessary, and I quote ‘in order to restrict freedom of movement’. Do we need to point out the blatant contradiction between this solution and the political opportunism that it reflects? Let us reiterate once again that safeguard mechanisms are already in place and that they have been used several times already; there is no need to create a new one. In fact, what should alert us with the calling into question of what is a founding and historical of European integration is the fact that it is symptomatic of looking inwards and of rejecting solidarity. It is not a coincidence if free movement is being attacked today; it is a new symptom of the crumbling of European cohesion and of the nationalistic scourge gaining ground. This is plain to see in the euro crisis as well as in many other areas. The Union’s motto is moving away from ‘United in diversity’ and is getting dangerously close to ‘every man for himself’."@en1
