"Road safety in the European Union only stands to gain following implementation of the directive which formalises the exchange of vehicle registration data between Member States. It will make it possible to pursue serious road incidents throughout the whole of the EU and ensure that European citizens are equal before the law, no matter which Member State they live in. The Union will have safer roads once the directive has been enforced. This is a first very important step towards greater road safety and, given that it has been achieved after three years of negotiations, this makes it all the more important. We are moving towards the ideal situation where people who have committed offences or infringements will no longer get away with them simply because they do not live in the state where the act was committed. The authorities in the country where the act was committed will subsequently send offenders a registered letter to make them aware of the nature of their offence and the penalty which will be applied, as well as of possible methods of redress and the legal repercussions. Fines and the methods of enforcement will be set out according to the regulations of the country where the offence was committed. I hope that the directive will be adopted soon by the Council of Ministers and that it will come into force by the specified deadline."@en1
