"Mr President, Prime Minister and President-in-Office of the European Union, if I am not mistaken, you are a Pole who belongs to the Kashubian minority, and perhaps for that two-fold reason, you will understand why I am speaking to you in Italian, because I am not allowed to speak in Catalan, which is the language of more than 10 million European citizens.
Poles and Catalans are brothers in a way, because in 1939, the Spanish fascist army called the people of Catalonia ‘Poles’. For we, too, had been defeated by Franco, just as you had been defeated by Hitler and Stalin. Just as we were brothers in the worst defeat of the 20th century, we hope that we can be brothers in the 21st century era of democracy and freedom, too. In this respect, we can work together to obtain minority rights and to ensure that Catalonia, Scotland and Flanders, like Poland and so many others, become new EU States."@en1
