This motion for a European Parliament resolution on the future of social services of general interest is important because, first and foremost, access to services of general interest is a fundamental right recognised in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. The studies conducted by Eurofound (European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions) highlight that social services of general interest significantly enhance EU citizens’ quality of life and ensure their full inclusion in society, which is a key pillar of the European social model and of the way in which European societies are organised. The importance of this report has already been highlighted as well by the fact that it identifies new approaches to social services of general interest, based on the issues identified by providers and users, indicating the need for urgent solutions due to the economic crisis and rising unemployment."@en1
