The European cohesion and structural policy certainly has a very important role to play in issues relating to future competitiveness. There must be agreement between Europe’s objectives and objectives relating to regional development if we want to achieve the European added value that we want. This added value can be created, of course, by competitive and strong regions, which is why we need to use cohesion policy to reduce the large differences in development among regions. I supported the European Commission’s proposal to establish a clear-cut, transparent objective for the transitional regions – between 75% and 90% – in order that the different European regions receive equal treatment when it comes to providing them with support. I therefore did not support Amendment 5, paragraphs 33 and 99, by the rapporteur, Mr Pieper, and I supported the principles set out in paragraph 34, which state that regions should be treated equally and not through an opaque system"@en1
