"I voted against Mrs Lepage’s report on allowing Member States to restrict or prohibit the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in their territory. The question of authorising or prohibiting GMO crops on national territory is extremely important for both French and European agriculture. It requires in-depth scientific and environmental discussion rather than inflammatory and unworkable rhetoric. In my view, the decision to authorise or prohibit GMO crops should only be taken once an independent expert assessment has been completed, based solely on objective health and environmental criteria and in accordance with the precautionary principle. What is more, the decision should be taken at Community level, under the auspices of the European Food Safety Agency. The same criteria must be applied to all Member States so as to guarantee fair and healthy competition."@en1
