"I would like to congratulate my colleague Mr Hoarau, the MEP from the Communist Party of Réunion, for his report on products that could benefit from an exemption from or a reduction in dock dues, which was adopted by the European Parliament by a very large majority: 652 votes in favour, 15 votes against and 4 abstentions. This report recognises the particular difficulties faced by the ultra-peripheral regions: insularity, distance from large markets, superficial weakness and economic dependence with regard to a small number of products. Parliament is drawing the consequences from this particular situation and is authorising France to provide, up to 1 July 2014, tax exemptions from dock dues for the four overseas French departments for certain products manufactured in those departments. The report goes further, though, calling on the Commission to consider extending these exemptions beyond 2014 so that dock dues will continue to favour the competitiveness of local products, jobs and policies for investment in the overseas departments The vote on this report shows, once again, that, if majorities in the European Parliament can come together on a number of issues, progress is possible."@en1
