"We voted against these fisheries agreements, as there is no ceiling on the fishing quotas and because studies indicate that fish stocks in the world’s oceans are declining. In several of the countries concerned there is widespread corruption, with the effect that the money from the agreements does not benefit the local population. Moreover, there are often no checks on compliance.
The Commission’s negotiating position was based, among other things, on the results of an ex-post evaluation of the current protocols carried out by external experts. These evaluations were declared classified by the Commission and we believe that they must be made available to the European Parliament as soon as possible."@en1
