"I supported this resolution because I am convinced that the European Union’s desire to bolster its presence within international organisations is entirely legitimate. European citizens, through our governments, have given a legal personality and specific powers to the Union. European integration has built on a set of fundamental values that are constantly being extended. We have a duty to coordinate our activities and to promote the unity of our Union, as we have already done in the World Trade Organisation. More work remains to be done.
However, there are some encouraging signs. The Union is trying to equip itself with the right foreign policy tools (appointment of a High Representative, creation of the European External Action Service). With its newly improved status, the Union will now be able to express its position within the United Nations General Assembly."@en1
