"In 2010, the total amount of bilateral trade between the EU and Japan, the third largest economy in the world in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), reached EUR 120 billion. Japan is the EU’s sixth largest trading partner and the EU is Japan’s third largest trading partner. There is, however, significant untapped trade potential. As such, it is necessary to strengthen trade relations between the EU and Japan by focusing on the removal of non-tariff barriers to trade and investment, including numerous restrictive rules and regulatory measures for EU companies in accessing the Japanese market. In this way, the EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement has great potential for benefiting both economies."@en1
