"Transparency of political institutions’ activities is a prerequisite for legitimacy. It must always and, in all circumstances, be easy to scrutinise how any decision was made, what factors influenced it and, above all, how resources – which means taxpayers’ money – were used. Parliament was the first European institution to set up a register of lobbyists in 1996. The resolution adopted today highlights the fact that the establishment of a common register ensures the widest participation of the various categories of operators while respecting their differences and specific identities. This mechanism provides important information such as the number of individuals and organisations involved in all the activities relating to the register and the level of EU resources received by registrants."@en1
