The Prespa hydrographic basin is shared between Greece, Albania and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. As a source of biodiversity of undisputable ecological interest, and therefore also as a natural climate regulator, its protection is worthy of the efforts of the European Union in line with the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). Pursuant to this directive, in the case of a hydrographic basin that extends beyond the territorial limits of the Union, it is necessary to implement coordination efforts between the countries involved and for this reason, on 2 February 2010 the Agreement on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Prespa Park Area was concluded; the Commission was also involved, representing the EU. However, its final adoption by the Council requires the consent of the European Parliament. For the above reasons, I voted to adopt this agreement."@en1
