"− We welcome the adoption of this report by the Member from our group, Mrs Svensson, who is also Chair of Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. We know that violence against women represents a serious violation of human rights and freedoms, both individually and collectively, with enormous social consequences, given that violence against women involves a wide range of human rights violations, including domestic violence, sexual violence, prostitution, the trafficking of women, sexual and psychological harassment, and violence against women in their places of work. The prevention and eradication of violence against women are essential strategic objectives important to the progress for which our civilisation is striving. Some studies on gender-based violence estimate that between a fifth and a quarter of Europe’s female population have been victims of acts of physical violence at least once during their adult lives, and around one tenth of them have suffered sexual violence. It is also believed that around 26% of children and young people report cases of physical violence during childhood and adolescence, which is particularly worrying if we take into account premises based on social learning… ( )"@en1
