"In Europe, one woman in four is a victim of at least some form of violence during her lifetime. The annual cost of this violence is estimated to be in the region of EUR 33 billion, a figure that should not be underestimated.
Respect for the principle of gender equality is a value which is consistently disregarded in the face of a vast range of human rights violations affecting women, which damage their physical and mental health, their rights and their position in society. The few figures currently availably do not provide a complete view of the phenomenon, but it is sufficient to observe familial or work contexts to see that we have still not managed to protect women from violence.
I support the commitment taken by the Commission to present in 2011-2012, the ‘Communication on a strategy to combat violence against women, domestic violence and female genital mutilation’, to be followed up by an EU action plan, but I also hope we will see the adoption of a comprehensive policy approach, comprised of legal, judicial, executive and health actions, which can effectively reduce this kind of violence and the consequences which it unfortunately has on the 26% of children and young people who report having experienced physical violence in childhood."@en1
