"Sustainable development in rural areas has always been considered a priority in Europe, in order that we may guarantee the best possible living conditions for men and women who choose to work in this sector.
Currently, 26.7 million people are employed in the agricultural sector in the European Union. Forty-two per cent of these are women, and at least one agricultural business in five is managed by a woman. An image of rural female reality emerges from these figures that is radically different from that of previous decades, in which women were the protagonists of change and came from very diverse social and economic backgrounds across the Member States.
I support the text of this report since it draws attention to the need to plan European support strategies for rural areas that are tailored specifically for women, in order to work towards improving women’s social and working conditions in the medium term."@en1
