"The earthquake and the tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March have led to the deaths of many thousands of people (the current count exceeds 27 000 dead and missing), and have caused considerable material damage. Under these conditions, Japan must now deal with a nuclear accident of extreme seriousness. As Japan has not experienced such a crisis since the Second World War, I fully support the resolution of the European Parliament on the situation in that country. I also call upon the EU to provide Japan with all the humanitarian, technical and financial assistance possible, including medical supplies, mattresses, tents, food, experts and specialists in radioactivity and nuclear energy ... I also wish to put on record my fullest solidarity with the Japanese people. I congratulate them on their mobilisation, their courage and their determination in the face of such a disaster. Moreover, given the gravity of the situation in the Fukushima power station, I call on the Japanese Government to demonstrate the fullest transparency and on the Member States of the EU to organise a broad public debate on energy, one that is not solely restricted to nuclear."@en1
