"Consumer rights are one of the main pillars of the internal market. Their protection and security are vital to greater security in driving the acquisition of goods on a day-to-day basis for cross-border trade and, as a result, for the competitiveness of businesses.
In this sense, a balance between consumer rights and the cost that these may impose on businesses is crucial. Moreover, it is important to bear in mind the different national characteristics and the protection that is offered, with due respect for the principle of subsidiarity.
I therefore believe that this is an area where, on the one hand, maximum harmonisation may be useful, but, on the other, minimum harmonisation may also be adopted according to the type of contract, as being more appropriate."@en1
