"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the text voted on today is the result of a long and complicated journey that began in October 2008 with the aim of putting the consumer at the heart of the protection offered for purchases made abroad.
The objective that the Union and the EU institutions must set themselves is to help the internal market to function better, with the aim of increasing consumer confidence whilst at the same time supporting our businesses.
The directive voted on today by this House represents the synthesis of four directives on this issue which were in force until today. The directive shows our desire to harmonise the regulations currently in force in the different legal systems in a much more incisive way, avoiding the legal fragmentation that unfortunately has very often ended up being a hindrance both to undertakings – whose aim is to be able to be competitive on the cross-border market – and to consumers. For these reasons, I consented to and voted in favour of this report."@en1
