"Mr President, exactly a year ago, the leaders of the European Union and the Greek Prime Minister decided that Greece should play the part of economic and social guinea pig. Extreme, antisocial measures were then taken, on the pretext of reducing the public deficit and debt and improving competitiveness. At the end of this experiment, public debt is just under 150%, unemployment stands at 15%, with unemployment among young people at 30%, inflation is close to 4.4% and the economy has shrunk by 6.6%. Commissioner Rehn, the Greek experiment has been a failure and you have exterminated the guinea pig economically, socially and politically. The leaders of the European Union have the same fate in store for other Member States that take recourse to the pact for the euro, which is the European version of the Greek memorandum. We are against this pact, because we do not want to exterminate workers, pensioners and the unemployed. Commissioner Rehn, when the Greek memorandum was signed, you wished the Greeks ‘ ’. If you are consistent in your wishes, you will also need to wish European workers ‘ ’ on Friday or Saturday."@en1
