"Enough study has been done and we have data sufficiently rigorous in order to categorically state that, in general terms, poverty affects women first and most severely in all societies, from the richest – and none has yet been able to successfully eliminate poverty within itself – to the poorest, in which poverty expands like a contagious disease that steals life expectancy and hope of life. However, we need a deeper and more specific understanding of this reality in the various Member States of the European Union so as to act in a better adapted and more effective way, with a view to the common goal of preventing and reducing poverty amongst women. It is worth stressing poverty amongst women in that we also have specific general indicators that point to its high impact on a community’s social fabric: because of women’s fundamental and permanent role in the family, it has been proven that the more that is invested in their education and social promotion, the more the community develops socio-economically. Combating poverty amongst women is a moral obligation but also a social investment. For these reasons, I voted for this report on the face of female poverty in the European Union."@en1
