"Equality between men and women constitutes one of the fundamental principles of EU law. The European Union’s objectives consist, firstly, of ensuring equality of opportunities and treatment between the two sexes and, secondly, of combating discrimination on the basis of sex. Despite all the efforts made as regards equality between men and women, even today, inequalities continue to exist in this area in the European Union. The employment rate among women (58.6%) continues to be lower than that of men (70.7%), even though the majority of students and university graduates are women. Only one in every 10 board members in EU businesses is a woman, and only 3% of executive directors are female. The average disparity between the wages earned by men and those earned by women in the EU continues to be 18%. In order for Europe to attain its sustainable growth, employment, competitiveness and social cohesion objectives, it will have to continue combating the inequalities that still exist between men and women, which is why I voted for this report."@en1
