"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, female poverty is a long-standing issue that has historic causes and is certainly not the product of an economic crisis.
I therefore voted in favour of the report by Mrs Plumb since I am convinced of the need to maintain a strong commitment, both in Europe and at a national level, to supporting further progress towards gender equality. I believe that the measures contained in this report will provide useful support – perhaps not exhaustive, but it is a step forward – to the strategies for implementing the European Pact for Gender Equality adopted by the European Council and to the framework of action on gender equality.
The promotion by Member States of specific programmes to promote the active inclusion or reintegration of women into the labour market is the best decision in that respect. However, it is essential that these programmes are not only coordinated at local, national and European level, but also find ways of coordinating with partners outside the European Union."@en1
