"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I only hope that what we are discussing right now does not end up being an additional and perhaps final death blow to our economies. We are already flooded with goods produced at low or very low cost, arriving mainly from east and south-east Asia. Many Italian companies, especially SMEs, have been brought to their knees due to unfair competition. This means that they cannot compete on the market, with tragic consequences as far as the economy and especially employment is concerned. This agreement provides for various safeguard and protection clauses, but who can assure us that these rules will really be applied later on? There are still too many unknowns, and the possible benefit to be had by a few large producers cannot always rebound on the smallest producers alone. In my region, Tuscany, our textile industry – historically a driving force – is already in a serious condition due to Asian competition: I only hope that Europe itself does not deal the death blow to this sector, and probably many others besides, with this agreement. We will not vote for this agreement."@en1
