Mrs Oomen-Ruijten’s report is based on the Commission Green Paper submitted in July 2010 and on the issues that this Institution has raised for debate with regard to the adequacy and sustainability of European pension systems. This paper serves as a precursor to the future White Paper containing a general analysis of the 27 Member States and a projection of the guidelines that the EU is laying down for its members, from which an effective response is expected. My reaction upon reading the report was positive, which is why I voted in favour of it. This draft is certainly too conservative considering what needs to be done. However, we can describe it as a good starting point, since it provides an overview of the pension system enlarged to 27 States. The establishment of a European pensions platform could be a perfect opportunity to open a debate between the EU Institutions and social partners concerned. The ultimate goal is to adapt pension systems and place them in the context of the demographic and economic variables our world is subject to."@en1
