"Mr President, I have voted against this report, despite the fact that I am in favour of Croatia joining the European Union. My problem with this report is that, even though it reads like one long list of the current corruption problems in Croatia, we still seem to be insisting that the negotiations be concluded in the next few months. We should actually be learning from our past mistakes.
In 2007, we admitted Romania and Bulgaria, even though we knew that they had not met the conditions and that corruption was a major problem. Knowing, as we do, that there are still so many major problems, I think that it is totally inappropriate and unacceptable that we should now be pinned down to a specific date."@en1
