"Falsified medicinal products make up 50% of medicines sold over the Internet and 1% to 3% of medicines sold by dispensing pharmacists. These falsified products are evolving: they now include life-saving medicines as well as lifestyle medicines. We have a duty to protect the health of our fellow citizens who choose to order medicines online in order to save time or money, unaware of the risks that they are running. What is more, these falsified medicines are entering the formal supply chain and finding their way into dispensing chemists’ stocks, where they could prove deadly to any one of us. Every year, 200 000 people lose their lives after ingesting falsified medicinal products. This is more than just a worrying trend: we need to fight this scourge with all the means at our disposal. For this reason, I welcome the forthcoming adoption of the directive, which will introduce a unique track and trace code to prove that medicinal products are authentic, together with a standard logo to identify trustworthy websites selling pharmaceutical products. However, I would like to stress that providing this safety, to which patients are entitled, must not be used as a justification for price increases."@en1
