"I voted in favour of this recommendation concerning the authorisation of enhanced cooperation for creating a European patent. In December 2010, 12 Member States, including France, wanted to use an enhanced cooperation procedure following disagreement among the 27, due to linguistic differences, on the introduction of an EU patent system. In the end, all the Member States except Italy and Spain decided to participate. I would like it to be possible for these two countries to be able to get involved in the initiative at any point. It is currently 11 times more expensive to file a patent in the European Union than in the United States. In the future, our researchers and businesses will finally be able to start competing effectively on innovation with the United States and Asia."@en1
