"Madam President, I welcome the report on the rights of passengers in bus and coach transport. It will be easier for EU citizens, including persons with disabilities, to use this form of service. The compromise was preceded by long consultations. During these, the European Parliament and Mr Cancian stood by people with disabilities until the very end. Unfortunately, the European Council proved to be more short-sighted and inflexible on this matter. I deeply regret that the European Council is unable to recognise that we are living in a rapidly ageing society. The number of people with disabilities will skyrocket overnight. We should realise that all EU citizens will suffer from this problem, and sooner or later, everyone will require assistance. Lastly, I would like to stress that our work is not yet done. A compromise has already been reached with regard to four modes of transport, and now it is time to create a single passenger rights charter, which can later facilitate the assertion of passengers’ rights."@en1
