"Mr President, US President Obama, in his annual State of the Union Address, called for the US to be strengthened in the area of innovation. He referred to innovation as ‘our generation’s Sputnik moment’. I am pleased that the EU is sending a clear signal through the ‘Union of Innovation’ programme regarding the importance of innovation for maintaining the economic position of Europe in global competition. In my opinion, one of the key instruments for the success of the ‘Union of Innovation’ project, and for maintaining a lead against innovation tigers such as China and Brazil, is the establishment of a single EU patent. The single patent would help to give a considerable boost to the competitiveness of European businesses. I therefore feel very frustrated that the creation of such a key instrument for the development of innovation in the EU is being held up by some countries over secondary issues such as the protection of language. I therefore back the proposal to enhance cooperation, even at the expense of some Member States not participating. We must not allow ‘our generation’s Sputnik moment’ to slip away."@en1
