"Mr President, the recent events both in Tunisia and now in Egypt have caught the attention of the whole world. The demonstrations by the citizens of these countries against the ossified regimes which hold power have, however, brought hope for permanent political change. For the transformation which has begun in Tunisia to continue peacefully, the full support of a democratic Europe is imperative. In adding my voice to the appeal of the President of the European Parliament, Mr Buzek, I too call for all steps to be taken to ensure the conduct of fully democratic elections in Tunisia and to bring about the formation of a government of national unity. I also support the call of the parliamentary delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries for an independent investigation to be carried out to determine how far those who govern Tunisia are responsible for the use of violence and for the bloodshed. Cooperation and the development of mutual and equal relations with Tunisia lie in the interests both of the citizens of Europe and of Tunisians. Today, therefore, I voted in favour of the resolution – a document which gives details of the prospects for this cooperation."@en1
