"Mr President, this resolution is very important, because it is first and because it comes at a particularly important moment. We know of the massacre of Christians in Iraq. We know what is happening in Egypt, and what has not happened there in recent years. We know of individual cases – but they are still important – of the murder of Christian clergy – and not only clergy – in Turkey, Syria and Pakistan. We know, too, what is going on in certain countries in Africa where there is a Muslim majority. In view of this, I am greatly surprised by the silence of the President of the European Commission, Mr Barroso. For a week, he did not comment. Only when pressed by the Prime Ministers of Member States – although not by the Prime Minister of my country – did he make a statement on this matter. It is good that Mrs Ashton has said something about this, but still. the head of the European Commission should have intervened immediately in this matter. He did not do so, and this is to be regretted."@en1
