"During this plenary session, we voted on the European Parliament resolution on the European Initiative on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. I voted in favour of this resolution, since it is a very important step on the path towards detailed proposals for joining up existing political strategies and ways of managing diseases of this kind. Neurodegenerative diseases are currently one of the main causes of disability among elderly people, and it is highly likely that the number of people affected by these diseases will increase significantly. This fact becomes all the more relevant if we take into account the growth in the average life expectancy and the falling ratio of employed people to retiring people. In view of the above, it is a matter of fundamental importance that prevention be placed at the centre of all strategies, and that efforts be made to ensure that diagnoses are made as early as possible. As a representative of the people, I feel jointly responsible for ensuring that the EU deploys its powers to deal with the abovementioned problem."@en1
