However, since 1978, European legislation has been in place to regulate mergers of public limited liability companies from the same Member State. It is important to regulate these mergers because they may significantly affect the interests of the employees, shareholders and creditors of those companies. They may be adversely affected, for example, if the merger is subsequently cancelled. On this European matter as on others, we need clarity and legal certainty. This is what we are trying to achieve with the codification of this directive. I voted for this resolution because I believe that confidence is an incredible driving force for growth."@en1
