lpv:translated text	"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I have been following the legislative procedure for the European citizens’ initiative very closely and I am happy – partly on the basis of the statements by the Council and the Commission – that the first petitions will be launched a year from now. I am also proud to be able to announce to the European Parliament that in Italy a broad grassroots movement of citizens, associations and committees has sprung up in the wake of the approval of the outrageous directive on animal research. This movement will not sit on its hands this year, but will work to prepare a proposal for the Commission: a proposal to give the European Union modern and civilised laws and that says ‘no’ to animal testing – a cruel and scientifically ineffective practice – while strongly encouraging alternative methods. Saying ‘no’ to vivisection must be an objective of the European Union, since it is a desire of its citizens."@en1
