"Over the last few years a series of highly significant political acts, such as Georgia’s accession to the Council of Europe and to the European Convention on Human Rights, have brought it closer than ever before to the European Union. I voted in favour of the draft Council decision concerning the conclusion of the Agreement between the European Union and Georgia on the facilitation of the issuance of visas because I believe it is extremely important for Europe to implement a neighbourhood policy with its neighbouring countries, especially with regard to ‘hot spots’ such as the Caucasus, where the interests of the EU itself are reflected in an important trade partnership. Furthermore, reducing the bureaucracy and controls with regard to a neighbouring country can only improve relations with that country, creating the conditions for greater control of the area and, hence, for more security, development and stability. The two agreements concluded – on the readmission of persons residing without authorisation and on the facilitation of the issuance of visas – will be absolutely instrumental in achieving these objectives."@en1
