"Mr President, I was happy to vote for the compromise version of the Directive on Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment. We are all committed to the protection of nature and public health, but it is also necessary to maintain some sense of balance. Today, in the middle of an economic crisis, it is not wise to increase the financial burden on small firms and consumers through very stringent provisions. I therefore appreciated the fact that the inter-institutional team charged the Commission with reviewing the original list of hazardous substances rather than immediately banning them, which would have a negative impact on SMEs and on the social and economic situation of the EU."@en1
